Introduced in the opening moments of SoD, Marcus and Maya have great traits and some unique moments of voice actingвЂ“you know, the stuff that comes with being a fully written character instead of вЂњjustвЂќ a procedurally generated character. They are are absolutely my best characters, because both were tailored for me to get a handle on the game. The choice came down to this: do you stay in the safe space and perform slow, steady maintenance? Keep the status quo indefinitely? Devote yourself to what already is? Or do you, well, do something?ДЄt face value, I should never play as anyone except for Marcus Campbell and Maya Torres. He was apprehensive about going to Marshall for a whole dayвЂ“on top of everything else, he knew heвЂ™d be out of commission when he got backвЂ“but it was a sort of energetic anxiety that drove him. Not something exciting and something frightening. There was something exciting and frightening about this.

The Church was running low on space, but there was always the old Kirkman place they could move into. SpencerвЂ™s Mill still had tons of supplies. See how bad things were throughout the Valley, but what was the point. What happened if he turned while Marcus was down in Marshall? What if Ed broke his damned ribs again and couldnвЂ™t man the watchtower anymore? What if the rats got back into the food?ДЄnd what was he even doing this for? Why ignore the safety of the familiar and the responsibility of leadership? To go shake hands in Marshall? Really? To flatter a judge who decided that sheвЂ™s the acting authority in both the judiciary and executive branches of the county? He told himself he was just going to scout around, maybe find a new place to move the group to. Hell, the PastorвЂ“who theoretically ran the Church theyвЂ™d been staying inвЂ“was sick with some sort of cough, and given the circumstances, that is a very troubling thing. Maya could take care of herself, but what about Ed, Lilly, Frank, Jade, and everyone else. More importantly: he was leaving behind the concerns of the people heвЂ™d been working with. HeвЂ™d personally set up a number of outposts where he could restock on ammo and which were trapped to keep the zombies.

SpencerвЂ™s Mill was familiarвЂ“heвЂ™d spent the last few days learning the streets, the shortcuts, the places that would have some spare food or medical supplies. He was only a few minutes out of SpencerвЂ™s Mill, the little town that he and his group of survivors called home, when he first wondered if this was a mistake. Marcus Campbell was on the road to a new city. IвЂ™m trying to remember any other game thatвЂ™s made travel to a new area feel so dangerous and monumental. Hopefully thatвЂ™ll get him through this mess heвЂ™s in now. All FrankвЂ™s got is Alcoholic, Drank a Lot, One-Time Jock, and Off the Wagon. Some characters are cooks or doctors or gardenersвЂ“the benefits of which should be clear. Other members of my crew have traits like вЂњPhysical Powerhouse,вЂќ which lets them carry more items, or вЂњLoved Hiking,вЂќ which lets them increase the rate at which their Cardio and Wits (running and searching, respectively) improve. While some of these characters are specifically authored by Undead Labs, most of them are procedurally generated from a set of possible traits and backgrounds and man, Frank got a rough draw on that one. When you die as a character, theyвЂ™re gone forever, so itвЂ™s best to have a few extra on hand. This is important because each of them is mortal. Once youвЂ™re officially вЂњfriendsвЂќ with someone, you can play as them. This is a game about scrounging for resources, careful exploration, and keeping a small crew of survivors from imploding because that one dude is a total prick.ДЄs your group grows and prospers, you gain trust with individuals youвЂ™ve recruited. SoD is an open world survival RPG set in a zombie filled, post-apocalyptic region of the northwestern US, and it leans heavily into that вЂњsurvivalвЂќ descriptor. And thatвЂ™s why heвЂ™s crouching in a bush waiting for an egg timer to go off.Д®ven though Frank is one of the worst characters that IвЂ™ve been playing as in Undead LabsвЂ™ State of Decay, heвЂ™s also one of my favorites. Now that Marcus, the ad hoc leader of the group, was recuperating from a long scouting mission, it was time for Frank to start pulling his weight. As one of the campвЂ™s newest recruits, he was expected to pitch in. He was an ex-college football star with a bum knee and a bald spot, and he knew that didnвЂ™t really bring much to the table.
